The Albanian language is considered one of the oldest and most unique languages in Europe. It is the official language of Albania, Kosovo, and is also spoken in parts of North Macedonia, as well as by Albanian communities worldwide. Today, around 7.5 million people speak Albanian.
Albanian belongs to the Indo-European language family, yet it stands completely on its own as an independent branch. This makes it a true linguistic treasure – ancient, distinct, and unique in its grammar and structure.
While the exact “birthdate” of the Albanian language is still unknown, a study published last year suggested that Albanian may be around 6,000 years old. In the same research, led by Professor Paul Heggarty and 33 co-authors, Indo-European was estimated to be approximately 8,100 years old. According to the findings, the family split into several branches around 7,000 years ago, one of which eventually evolved into modern Albanian.
Although independent, Albanian shares certain similarities with languages like Greek, Armenian, and even the ancient Phrygian, which is why it’s sometimes grouped under the term “Balkan Indo-European.”
There are many interesting idioms and expressions in Albanian, such as “to have a head full of garlic” (meaning to be stubborn) and “to have a head full of water” (meaning to be forgetful).
And here’s a delicious fun fact: Albanians proudly claim they produce the best olive oil in the world – yes, even better than Italy! In recent years, olives have become a strategic agricultural focus due to Albania’s ideal Mediterranean climate. One of the country’s most prized native varieties is Kalinjot, grown mainly in the south. These olives produce a wonderfully balanced oil with hints of pleasant bitterness and a peppery finish.
